Group L closes the 2026 World Cup draw with the most asymmetric split outside Group J: England is the only team with qualification probability above 80% (85.3%) and the only team with a significantly positive Δ xG (+1.22). The real battle is for 2nd place between Croatia (67.3% qual, p2 39.4%) and Panama (37.6% qual, p2 25.6%) — and the deciding match is the MD2 Panama–Croatia in Toronto (0.23/0.32/0.45). Ghana (9.8% qual, Δ xG −1.39) arrives as the structural sparring partner of the group.

1 · The model's verdict in numbers

The Ensemble v1 (DIBP + Dual SPI + Elo + Bayesian Poisson, calibrated with temperature T=0.85 over 364 validation matches, post-calibration ECE 3.3%) produces probability predictions for each of the 103 World Cup fixtures. The table below shows the average per-match win probability for each nation within the group (not the probability of finishing 1st — that is covered in section 4):

NationPer-match win prob (avg)xG forxG againstΔ xG
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England59.2%2.110.89+1.22

🇵🇦 Panama29.5%1.271.47-0.20
🇬🇭 Ghana11.1%0.752.13-1.39

England concentrates 26 more qual points than Croatia (85.3% vs 67.3%) — the group with the widest distance between 1st and 2nd favorites in the World Cup. But between 2nd and 3rd (Croatia 67.3% vs Panama 37.6%) there are only 30 points — the tightest 2nd-3rd split of any group in the entire tournament. Total English dominance at the top, tight war in the middle.

England

17th appearance · World champion 1966 (host)

85.3% qualification, 58.0% to top the group. Δ xG +1.22 (2.11 for / 0.89 against). Bellingham–Foden–Saka in attack, Rice–Mainoo in midfield, Stones–Konsa in defense. The most complete English generation since 1966. Tuchel on the bench changes the tactical plan. xP 6.12 — the third-highest xP in the entire World Cup.

Model strengths — Strengths: unmatched offensive depth — Bellingham as hybrid 8/10, Foden inside, Saka wide, Kane as reference. Midfield with Rice and Mainoo. Defense with Stones, Konsa and Trippier. Δ xG +1.22 is top-8 in the World Cup. Tuchel brings German structure to English talent.

Risks — Risks: emotional management when England is favorite — repeating history of 2006, 2010, 2016. MD2 vs Ghana looks routine but Ghana has Kudus at West Ham and plenty of talent. The real risk is the Round of 16 crossover: 2nd from Group K (Colombia likely).

Realistic path — Most likely path: 1st in group (58.0%) or 2nd (27.3%). The 1st-2nd split isn’t entirely closed — a slip in MD1 vs Croatia and the hierarchy changes. Round of 16 vs 2nd of Group K.

🇭🇷

Croatia

7th appearance · Finalist 2018; 3rd place 2022

67.3% qualification, 39.4% to finish 2nd. Δ xG +0.37 — the only other positive Δ xG in the group besides England. Modrić at 40 in his last World Cup. Transition generation: Sučić, Baturina, Pašalić inherit from Brozović and Kovačić. Brutal pedigree: finalists 2018, third 2022. xP 4.87.

Model strengths — Strengths: Modrić-Kovačić-Brozović still work at this level, now with replacements in Sučić and Baturina. Δ xG +0.37 is modest but positive. Tournament pedigree: the only team to make a final + third place in the last two consecutive World Cups. Build matches from possession + quick transitions.

Risks — Risks: age — Modrić 40, Perišić 37, Brozović 33. Physicality can’t sustain three matches in 10 days at the 2018 rhythm. Δ xG +0.37 is the lowest of any qualified favorite in the World Cup. MD2 vs Panama in Toronto can become their hardest match of the group.

Realistic path — Most likely path: 2nd (39.4%) or 1st (27.9%). Round of 16 vs 1st of Group K (Portugal likely) — tough crossover. If they finish 2nd they play in the US; if 1st they likely play in Canada.

🇵🇦

Panama

2nd appearance · WC debut Russia 2018

37.6% qualification — the best qual of any non-host CONCACAF side in the tournament. Δ xG −0.20. Generation forged in MLS and Liga MX. Thomas Christiansen (Danish-Spanish) manages a disciplined 4-4-2. History: second World Cup after 2018. xP 3.58.

Model strengths — Strengths: collective organization, very compact 4-4-2, quick transitions with Tapia and Murillo. Experienced generation — several play in MLS or Liga MX. Christiansen (European) has given them tactical mid-block reading. The 37.6% qual is the highest of any non-host CONCACAF.

Risks — Risks: 1.47 xG against per match. Δ xG −0.20. 2nd place depends almost entirely on MD2 vs Croatia. If Panama lose, their qual drops from 38% to 12%. If they win, it jumps to 65%+. That match is the entire group for Panama.

Realistic path — Most likely path: 3rd (37.0%) or 2nd (25.6%). 2nd place is real — not fantasy. If they advance, Round of 16 against 1st of Group K (Portugal) or 2nd (Colombia) — either is historic for Panama.

Ghana

5th appearance · Quarterfinals 2010

9.8% qualification. Δ xG −1.39: worst in the group. 2.13 xG against per match. Generation spread across Premier League, Bundesliga and MLS: Kudus, Partey, Iñaki Williams. History: quarterfinals 2010 (Suárez with the hand). This time will be 4th. xP 1.74.

Model strengths — Strengths: Kudus at West Ham is a top-5 African player, Partey still performs, Iñaki Williams adds verticality. History of 4 consecutive World Cups before 2026 (missing 2018). Coaching staff that knows the tournament.

Risks — Risks: 2.13 xG against per match — worst defense in the group and top-5 worst in the World Cup. Δ xG −1.39. Only 2.1% chance of topping the group. Generationally broken: post-Asamoah, post-Gyan, no defensive replacements.

Realistic path — Most likely path: 4th. To qualify they need to beat Panama in MD1, take a point off Croatia in MD3 and pray. Real probability <10%. Most winnable match is MD1 vs Panama (0.19/0.31/0.50).

4 · Probabilistic qualification scenarios

⚠️ Clarification: two different metrics

Up to this point we have shown the average per-match win probability (how strong each team is in any given individual match). But "who finishes 1st in the group?" is a different question: it requires winning ENOUGH matches AND scoring MORE points than the other 3 by the end of matchday 3. For that we simulate the entire group 100,000 times and count how often each team finishes 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

Δ xG is brutally revealing: England +1.22, Croatia +0.37, Panama −0.20, Ghana −1.39. There’s a clear step England > rest, then a tight three-team compression. The difference between Croatia (+0.37) and Panama (−0.20) is only 0.57 expected goals — 2nd place is much more open than FIFA ranking suggests.

Simulating the six group matches 100,000 times under the model's probability distributions, we obtain the following probabilities of finishing the group in each position. These numbers are the most relevant probabilistic input for informed Battle Royale decisions.

NationP (1st)P (2nd)P (qualify)P (eliminated)
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England58%27%85%15%
🇭🇷 Croatia28%39%67%33%
🇵🇦 Panama12%26%38%62%
🇬🇭 Ghana2%8%10%90%

England wins the group in 58% of the 100k simulations. Croatia 28%, Panama 12%, Ghana 2%. Joint probability of England and Croatia advancing: 58%. Joint probability of England and Panama advancing: 32% — a third of scenarios include Panama in the Round of 16.

5 · Expected Points (XP) per nation

Another powerful metric: the expected number of points each nation will accumulate across its three group fixtures, weighted by the model's probabilities. Results:

NationXPExpected goals (for)Expected goals (against)
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England6.125.392.53
🇭🇷 Croatia4.874.233.15
🇵🇦 Panama3.583.183.72
🇬🇭 Ghana1.742.195.59

xP England 6.12 vs Croatia 4.87: 1.25 expected points apart — clear distance. But xP Croatia 4.87 vs Panama 3.58 is only 1.29 — similar distance. In other words, Croatia is closer to Panama than to England. Ghana 1.74 is one of the lowest xPs in the tournament.

6 · Key match: Panama vs Croatia

Panama–Croatia, MD2, Toronto — the decisive match for 2nd place. Croatia favored (0.23/0.32/0.45) but not overwhelmingly. Draw is the most interesting model result: leaves everything open for MD3, with Croatia playing Ghana (winnable) and Panama playing England (probable loss). This is the match to watch to understand who joins England in the knockouts.

7 · The upset the model allows

Croatia takes a point off England in MD1 Probability 34.0%. If Croatia draws, their qual jumps from 67% to ~80% and the 1st-2nd split becomes complicated for England. If Croatia wins (20.8%), England could finish 2nd. It’s the most likely structural upset scenario in the group.

Panama beats Croatia in MD2 Probability 23.2%. If Panama wins, their qual jumps from 38% to ~70% and they practically secure 2nd. For Croatia it would be a disaster — they’d drop to 3rd with few points. The scenario that changes the entire group.

★ Model pick for group winner
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England · 58% probability to finish 1st
Group L read: England qualifying as 1st is the cleanest pick (fair odds ~1.50) — value only if you find +1.70. 2nd place is where the value sits: Croatia 2nd at ~2.50 and Panama 2nd at ~3.80 — Panama has the better relative value given the real 25.6%. MD1 England-Croatia draw (34%) carries value if local odds go above 3.20. England Asian +1.5 vs Ghana is a clinical pick.

8 · Methodology

How these probabilities were calculated

The MatchScan Ensemble v1 combines four independent predictive models weighted by their historical accuracy over the consolidated 87,000+ match database:

DIBP (37.5%) — Dynamic Inter-team Bayesian Poisson. Goal-generation model with inter-team rating adjustment.
Dual SPI (25%) — Soccer Power Index with separate attack/defense adjustment.
Elo v0 (37.5%) — Dynamic Elo system with opponent-strength adjustment.
Bayesian Poisson (0% in final blend) — Bayesian model showing instability on asymmetric matches.

The resulting probability set is calibrated via scalar temperature T=0.85 (Platt scaling) with Bayesian correction b_H=-0.24 and b_D=+0.38. Calibration is verified over 364 cross-validation matches, yielding pre-calibration ECE of 4.68% and post-calibration ECE of 3.26% — very low expected calibration error, indicating published probabilities are reliable as frequentist expectations.
